Item description
Rare and iconic pair of beech wood benches. The high and comfortable seat, deliberately curved in the center, is made with green velvet springs and padding. The legs are slightly curved outwards to increase the stability of the bench. The benches are in their original condition: the wooden structure is good and solid, so we did not think of doing any restoration because their authentic appearance makes them truly seductive and fascinating and attests to their antiquity and authenticity; furthermore, everyone can provide a simple upholstery by choosing the color of the fabric personally to match their furniture. Both, on the inside of one leg, have a metal plate with the name of the famous and prestigious manufacturer Thonet (see photo) and were made by the company itself between 1950 and 1953 in Frankenberg, Germany, where the company moved from Vienna in 1889. The history of the Thonet company is very interesting. German cabinetmaker since 1819, already in 1830 Michael Thonet experimented with new possibilities of producing furniture on an industrial level by hot bending plywood and solid wood to create his famous chairs with elegantly sinuous lines and for the entire duration of his furniture production which became a true and its own industry, thus changing the history of design. Michael Thonet trained in the Biedermeier period. It is the period in which the concept of comfort, ornamental simplification and valorisation of wood as a material was born. Thonet will meet the tastes of a new and immense market: that of the small and medium bourgeoisie, of public establishments and meeting places. Thonet moved with his entire family to Vienna, where he founded the first factory in 1849 and achieved enormous success. Thonet's experiments even attracted the interest of Austrian prince Klemens von Metternich, among others. Soon, the inventor of the chair was entrusted with the entire furnishing of the Liechtenstein Palace and the Schwarzenberg Palace. The production enjoyed the applause of the Prince of Metternich and the Emperor himself and proved to be a success. Present at the universal exhibitions, Thonet gained the fame necessary to ensure large-scale production. In London in 1851 his production received a bronze medal and the opportunity was created to establish valuable relationships for the possibility of export. Michael has always used beech wood, the ideal wood for its long fibers and high elasticity capable of supporting bends, from the simplest to the most extreme. Thonet furniture began to appear in the pages of sales catalogs (25 models in 1859, 114 in 1884 and as many as 1,400 in 1915). Simple but elegant and refined, light but robust and solid, Thonet furniture has become true icons, so much so that it is considered among the most famous furniture in the world. The benches are in original condition.
