Description: Antique oil painting on canvas depicting The Immaculate Virgin and Jesus 'the Hunter'. Mary Immaculate is depicted with Jesus in her arms who kills the serpent with the cross, indicating that Mary is preserved from sin, but it is Jesus who took sin out of the world with his cross. Generally the Immaculata is depicted as the 'woman of the Apocalypse': standing, bathed in light against a background of sky, blessed by the Eternal Father and surmounted by the Dove of the Holy Spirit, with a halo of twelve stars and with her feet on a crescent moon under which is an aggressive serpent, often in the form of a dragon (in the first case to recall original sin, in the second to recall the vision of the Apocalypse). This is depicted with the serpent at its feet to recall original sin and is surrounded by a host of angels and cherubs. The splendid workmanship and refined colouring, evidently of the highest level, suggest attribution to a highly talented artist working in Naples in the first half of the 18th century. The figures are well modelled, the brushstroke is full-bodied and the use of chiaroscuro creates volume and plasticity. The light illuminates the figures, creating areas of chiaroscuro between the draperies of the robes, on which the use of blue and pink, superimposed on the underlying colours, is also evident to give greater prominence to the figures.
