Item description

Set of four Kentucky chairs by Carlo Scarpa for Bernini, 1970s-80s. There are some stains on the leather, most evident in one chair as visible from the photos. The part under the seat is quite broken. Apparent formal simplicity for a very complex design. A direct reference to craftsmanship, the Kentucky chair combines naturalness with the quality of expertly crafted leather; the visible stitching on the seat and back are decorative elements that are the result of sophisticated tailoring. The seat and back are anchored to the frame by individual elastic straps placed in tension, construction details that become highly decorative. The chair, which features a set-back seat, is designed to meet different needs, both in terms of functionality and ergonomics. Born in Venice in 1906, Carlo Scarpa studied architecture at the city's Academy of Fine Arts, where he graduated in 1926. He taught architectural drawing at the Academy, where he held several chairs during his lifetime, and simultaneously began his career as a designer and industrial and interior architect. His most important project in the years before World War II was the restoration of the Faculty of Economics at the University of Venice. In his work Scarpa often reveals that he is influenced by Art Nouveau and masters such as Frank Lloyd Wright and Josef Hoffmann. Scarpa's architecture is characterized by a great attention to the passage of time and constant change. He died in 1978 in Japan and is buried in the Brion complex of the San Vito d'Altivole (Treviso) cemetery, which he built in 1969 and is considered by many to be his masterpiece. In the history of Italian design, Bernini represents an extraordinary and unique experience that draws its foundations directly from the roots of wood "know-how" in the Lombardy region since the 15th century. An attitude and willingness that produced true design and production excellence that we can now find in museums and collections around the world.
