Marcuso table by Marco Zanuso for Zanotta, 1970s

Marcuso table by Marco Zanuso for Zanotta, late 1960s-1970s. Transparent crystal top and 18/8 stainless steel legs. A cult piece by Zanotta, designed by Marco Zanuso, brilliantly inaugurating the 70s design season. The table is made up of a thin crystal top with characteristic rounded corners, supported by four important tubular stainless steel legs, removable and screwed to stainless steel bottoms welded directly onto the plate. Zanuso imagines translating the deflector technology of the automobile to finally go beyond Marcel Breuer and all the others who had designed glass tables with a traditional structure of legs and crosspieces. With Marcuso everything changes, because "Zanuso traces the formal configuration of the object back to the fundamental geometries of the circle, the square and the rectangle. Once the suitable technology for direct welding between crystal and steel has been identified, the design research is oriented towards the solution of the attachment system between the support leg and the support surface, creating a stainless steel base which on one side is fixed to the glass top, and onto which the steel leg is screwed on the other". A constructively innovative table, structurally removable, "conceived and built like a modern building". Elegant and modern, Marcuso owes its name to a fun play on words: it is the acronym of its creator.
