Item description
Pair of Saffo table lamps by Angelo Mangiarotti for Artemide, 1970s. The Saffo lamp represents an icon of Italian design of the 70s. The name of the lamp comes from the Greek island where the poet Sappho lived. The design combines some recurring themes in Mangiarotti's work: the skilful use of glass and the sculptural shape of a mushroom. It consists of a very simple chromed metal ring base that supports the diffuser, made of mouth-blown Murano glass, which creates surprising interactions with light. The white surface of the diffuser presents an appropriately shaded light gradation which allows the light source to be hidden and constantly included to direct the beam upwards. The effect is perfect for an atmospheric lamp, which emits a soft light that enhances the material characteristics of the glass.
