Bassano school, Announcement to the shephards, oil on canvas, 17th c.

Large Venetian painting from the first half of the 17th century. Oil on canvas work depicting a religious subject, the annunciation to the shepherds. Scene typical of the Bassano school in subject and technique, characterized by a masterful use of chiaroscuro. Our particular painting is a very high quality copy of a work by Francesco Bassano the Younger (1549-1592). Given the pictorial quality it is presumably a workshop work of the famous Dal Ponte family (lacking authenticity). It had all begun with Bassano il Vecchio, born in Bassano Del Grappa in the late 15th century, and the tradition would continue with Jacopo Bassano and his sons until the 17th century. Note the quality of the drapery and the brilliant colors of the robes, also really well painted are the frightened and astonished faces of the characters at the sight of the angel. According to Luke's Gospel, an angel announces the birth of the messiah to a group of shepherds who were with their flock near Bethlehem. The episode is later followed by the adoration of the shepherds. Painting that has been restretched and has undergone conservation restoration with frame replacement and color restoration in some places (see photo). Work overall in good condition. Size without frame: 132 x 194 cm.
