Brut sofa by Konstantin Grcic for Magis

Brut three-seater sofa by Konstantin Grcic for Magis. The starting point of this project was a very specific production process: cast iron. It is one of the oldest methods of processing ferrous metals. Cast iron performs well under compression, in fact it is used as a structural material in bridge construction and, on a scale closer to that of furniture, as a base for heavy machinery. It is this use of cast iron that inspired Brut , a collection that includes armchairs, sofas, benches and tables. The name evokes something raw, unfinished, a massive piece of heavy and inflexible iron. However Brut also brings to mind the sweetness of sparkling wine, which speaks to us of refinement and elegance, qualities intrinsic to this project too. Sofa with polyester painted cast iron structure, cushions in fireproof expanded polyurethane (class 1 IM) removable, fabric upholstery. Konstantin Grcic was born in 1965; he learned the trade of carpenter at The John Makepeace School (Dorset, England) before studying design at the Royal College of Art in London.
