Item description
Lombard school oil painting on canvas depicting the portrait of a young woman, 1666. A smiling young girl is portrayed in an elegant black dress, embellished with lace on the neckline and the play of red and green lace and ribbons on the sleeves, which pendant with the embroidered red petticoat; she wears jewels on her neck, wrists, ears, in her hair style, where the austerity of pearls is lightened by colored ribbons; she holds a small bouquet of flowers, which emphasizes her gracefulness and grace. Restored and restretched, the second canvas bears an inscription, probably a copy of the original on the first canvas, indicating who the young woman is: "Margh.a D. Gridonia Gonz. Agnella - Soada Maffei - D'etta Anni XVIII," followed by a coat of arms with the initials C F.A.S. This inscription, in addition to defining her name and age, highlights the young woman's membership in the College of the Virgins of Jesus of Castiglione delle Stiviere, founded in 1608 by Marquise Guidonia Gonzaga together with her two sisters Cinzia and Olimpia, all nieces of San Luigi Gonzaga. The purpose of this college was to impart an education to young noblewomen or those from good families, who, with the dowry donated to the college, contributed to its sustenance. The portrait has minor defects. It is presented in a non-coeval antique frame, with minor flaws. Size without frame: 130 x 99 cm.
