Item description
An elegant and refined French bedside table in the Napoleon III style; it has two large drawers on the front, the front is shaped and is surrounded by a gold wire frame; the knobs are made of a beautiful brass casting representing a flower with a crown of leaves; also made of brass are the protections at the ends of the legs; also made of burnished brass is the refined railing that protects the marble top; the four legs are tapered downwards and have grooves along the body; the entire bedside table is made of oak, a wood that due to its strength and resistance is used for the construction of fine and durable furniture; the black varnish makes it exclusive and personal. The marble used for the top is a 'Bianco Statuario di Carrara', extracted from the quarries in the Apuan Alps in the area of Carrara (Tuscany-Italy); it is one of the lightest marbles, with a very low level of impurities. It has a very ancient formation dating back to almost 200 million years ago, when northern Tuscany was completely covered by the sea on the bottom of which calcareous sediments were deposited, allowing the formation of this marvellous white marble, characterised by a homogeneous background texture with shiny granules. It is one of the varieties of the famous pietra viva, and it is no coincidence that all the greatest sculptors and artists in history (Michelangelo, Donatello, Bernini. Canova) created their most famous works out of this excellent variety of marble, whose hues are so elegant as to seem almost ethereal. The bedside table was produced in the Napoleon III style between 1880 and 1885 by a craftsman's workshop in the French town of Liffon-le-Grand, located in the Vosges department in the Grand Est region. The Napoleon III style echoes the more serious and austere forms of the First Empire. However, the Eclecticism that characterised the period made it more graceful, refined and elegant, reflecting and well representing the socio-cultural and economic period that France was experiencing at the time. The object has been hand-treated using ancient restoration techniques by our team of craftsmen and is in excellent condition. Measures width 43 cm, depth 34 cm, height 74 cm. For all our shipments we use special packaging materials (custom-made wooden crates, polystyrene, etc.) for maximum protection and safety of the objects.
