Item description

Elegant and characteristic Italian coffee table in Art Deco style. The circular top is made of Sapele wood and is enriched by an elegant dark smoked glass. The small lower table top is also circular and also made of Sapele wood. The two tops are connected by three light cherry wood legs, which with their graceful and harmonious design create an aesthetically pleasing and sophisticated whole. The coffee table was handcrafted in Paolo Buffa's style between 1950 and 1955 in Brianza, a historic area of Lombardy known for its designer furniture made with great craftsmanship. We know for a fact that architect Buffa used Lombard cabinet-makers of recognised skill for the construction of his furniture, who used very refined materials also because the objects were mainly destined for the flats of the wealthy Milanese bourgeoisie. Our coffee table, with its quality, accuracy and finish, was almost certainly made by one of these master craftsmen. Paolo Buffa (1903-1970) was an Italian architect and designer known for his mid-century furniture. Characterised by a fusion of tradition and modernity, he used a combination of low-profile and rectilinear shapes in precious woods to produce his most classic pieces. Paolo Buffa began working in Gio Ponti's studio and later, from 1928, in close collaboration with architect A. Cassi Ramelli. He devoted himself mainly to designing furniture, continually proposing new models. More than a forerunner, he was a faithful spokesman of the taste of his time: neoclassical at first and then Novecento. Paolo Buffa was highly regarded internationally for the refinement of his design and the rigour of his execution, demonstrating an all-Italian competence. Before his death in 1970 in Milan, Buffa had been named one of the country's leading designers. Sapele is a prestigious wood with a reddish colouring similar to mahogany, originating from equatorial Africa; this sophisticated material has a dense weave and interwoven fibres, fine and uniform, and a good natural lustre; it is a robust, rather flexible, hard and compact type of wood, usually used for luxury furniture and cabinet-making, but also in yacht and boat furnishings, as well as in sophisticated and expensive musical instruments. Cherry wood is particularly used in northern Italy as solid wood (by solid wood we mean that portion of the wood that is extracted from the heartwood, the innermost part of the trunk). It has an excellent aptitude for finishing, which is why it is varnished naturally, so as not to compromise the beauty of the grain. The finish is brilliant whether treated with beeswax or shellac, treatments that enhance its warm and pleasant colour. With the combination of these precious woods and the black crystal, the craftsmen have created a charming, refined and captivating piece of furniture that, by virtue of its extreme elegance and soft, romantic line, makes it versatile and easy to place in any environment. The coffee table has been hand-treated using ancient restoration techniques by our team of craftsmen and is in excellent condition. It measures 55 cm in diameter, 60 cm in height. For all our shipments we use special packaging materials (custom-made wooden crates, polystyrene, etc.) for maximum protection and safety of the items.
