Item description
Original and rare Italian Art Deco coffee table. The design is particular and unusual: the large and massive central column acts as a support for a round top placed on its top, while another round top of the same size as the other has been positioned immediately below; the column ends with a black support base equipped at the bottom with six flattened sphere-shaped feet which give excellent stability to the entire structure. The coffee table was made in an artisan workshop in Lissone (Monza-Brianza-Italy) between 1930 and 1935 (the Lissone area has always been famous for the production of high-quality carpentry; the craftsmen were inspired by the desire to conceive an object with large dimensions but with strong and simple lines and gives the table a timeless elegance. Its design plays between austerity and originality and its exaggerated linearity gives the object a dynamic and majestic character. The two tops and the column were veneered with flamed European walnut (Juglans Regia), absolutely one of the most precious and fascinating woods which make it particularly appreciated in the luxury furniture sector. The flamed type presents itself as a set of twisted woody fibers which give the wood the characteristic hardness and compactness; this species of wood also has a unique aesthetic value, since, thanks to the multiple natural grains, always different, it is very elegant and refined. The two floors and the column, despite being worked with the same wood, logically have different characteristics and grains from each other. Veneer is an ancient woodworking technique that involves applying a thinner layer of fine wood onto a substrate of normal quality walnut wood. The high-quality walnut wood is harvested from trees grown specifically for this purpose and is then cut into thin sheets whose thickness varies from 1 to 2 millimeters. The base wood is prepared by applying a special glue and then the high-quality walnut slabs are applied manually and evenly. After this process, everything is pressed and left to dry, allowing the glue to adhere firmly between the fine walnut wood and the support, creating a stable veneer. Once dry, this is finished with sanding, polishing and the application of protective finishes, such as varnishes or oils, to improve the appearance and durability of the wood. The history of the coating dates back many centuries, it is believed that it was first used in ancient Egypt and China. Over the centuries this technique has spread throughout the world and has continued to evolve, becoming an important part of the production of high-quality furniture, luxury items and art objects. This ancient technique, applied to this coffee table, has allowed us to enhance the colours, flaming and grain of the precious walnut. The craftsmen who worked on this table managed to create an extraordinary, refined and fascinating piece of furniture, capable of communicating to us suggestions of times gone by, of tradition and functionality. The item was hand restored by our team of craftsmen and is in perfect condition. Column diameter: 36 cm.
