Item description
Cubosfera table lamp by Alessandro Mendini for Fidenza Vetraria, 1960s. Born in 1931, Mendini was one of the founding fathers of contemporary Italian design. Among his most famous products are the Proust armchair and the countless puppets he designed for Alessi, ranging from screwdrivers to salt and pepper shakers. Many of the pieces he created have become true pop culture icons, but others have gone somewhat unnoticed and remained niche objects that only a few connoisseurs know about. One such piece is undoubtedly the Cubosfera lamp, a design from the beginning of Mendini's career, created in 1968 for Fidenza Vetraria using a glass pressing process. Looking at the piece, its name becomes immediately obvious: the lamp is in fact a glass cube with a hollow sphere in the centre, which houses two light bulbs. The decorated bolt on the top can be unscrewed to reveal the core and to replace the bulbs if necessary. The precise manufacturing technique ensures a perfect match between the top and bottom (see photos). The extremely rare and sought-after lamp is surprisingly well preserved, with no chips or dents despite being over fifty years old. It is in perfect working condition and comes with a 220v Italian plug.
