Item description
Willow armchair in black stained ash by Charles Rennie Mackintosh for Cassina, 1970s. A throne armchair of fine Italian cabinet-making, designed by Charles Rennie Mackintosh in 1904. Re-launched in 1973 by Cassina. Production lot belonging to the first examples made in 1973. Black open-pore stained ash. Excellent condition, minimal signs of domestic use, used as a purely decorative object. Fifty years beautifully worn. Cassina I Mestri collection. Model that the master of the Glasgow school donated in 1904 to the "Willow Tea Rooms" in the town of the same name, the architect's birthplace. The high semi-circular backrest served to separate the entrance area from the tea room behind. The backrest incorporates the seat, perfectly illustrating Mackintosh's style of pure geometric rigour and Art Nouveau. Width 94 cm, depth 41 cm, height 119 cm, seat height 36 cm.
