Item description

Pair of gilded iron and velvet stools attributed to Pier Luigi Colli, 1950s. Prestigious and iconic pair of Italian stools. Massive iron bars with a square cross-section were used for the entire structure, the surface of which was finely decorated with carvings and arabesques, resulting in a strong decorative impact. The bars have been joined to form the design of the stools, which is pleasing and refined, elegant and aggressive. Three leaf-shaped decorations have been placed at the top of the legs. The entire structure has been richly gilded to give the ironwork preciousness and luminosity. The comfortable seat has been upholstered with an elegant and robust black velvet. The stools are unmarked, but all their characteristics lead us to attribute their design and execution to the famous designer Pier Luigi Colli. The stools were manufactured in Turin between 1950 and 1953 by Colli himself. Pier Luigi Colli (1895-1968) studied at the Ecole des Arts Decoratifs in Paris and returned to Italy in the 1920s to run the old Colli family furniture company (founded in 1831). Influenced by the Parisian style and Art Deco, Colli created designs that showed reinterpretations of these elegant movements. The Colli company had been active in Turin since 1850 and was famous for its carpets and lighting, including glass from Seguso and Murano. Colli's creations uniquely combined materials such as iron, crystal, brass, glass and wood, but the company is best remembered for its most important designer, Pier Luigi Colli. Colli's style is characterised by meticulous workmanship on the surfaces of objects; in fact, wood and metal are treated with tiny geometric carvings, as well as knurls, engravings and grooves. Particularly popular with the public were the wrought and gilded iron furniture from which consoles, chairs, bedside tables and mirrors were made. The surface of the iron was meticulously worked under Colli's careful and painstaking direction and the result was a highly decorative and high-quality product. His design, the excellent quality of his products and his eclectic style were appreciated all over the world and are still appreciated today. Colli made a strong contribution to mid-century modern furniture design, particularly in the 1950s and 1960s. His designs are highly sought after by collectors and enthusiasts of mid-century design. When Colli died in 1968, the company was passed on to his daughter Claudia, who led it until the early 1980s, when the business ceased. These stools have been restored and reupholstered by hand by our team of craftsmen and are in perfect condition.
