Item description
Plexiglass cat sculpture made in Brazil by Abraham Palatnik, 1970s. Abraham Palatnik, born in 1928 in Natal, Brazil, and deceased in 2020 in Rio de Janeiro, was a pioneering Brazilian artist, celebrated for his significant contributions to kinetic and optical art. His training in physics and mechanics, acquired in Tel Aviv, and interest in technology, movement and light guided his artistic exploration, fusing art and science in revolutionary ways. Famously known for his "Aparelhos Cinecromáticos" (Cinecromatic Devices), he debuted at the 1st São Paulo Biennial in 1951, where he received an honorable mention despite his work not fitting into traditional artistic categories. These devices, boxes lit from within with moving bulbs, created dynamic color fields through translucent fabrics, ushering in a new way of perceiving art. Palatnik's career, spanning seven decades, has seen the creation of works that exploit the relationship between art and technology, with a particular focus on kinetic and optical effects. His series of "progressions" and "kinetic objects", using materials such as wood, cardboard and acrylic, reflect a deep interest in rhythmic patterns and movement. Palatnik has participated in numerous international exhibitions and his works are present in prestigious collections such as the MoMA in New York and the MAM-SP in São Paulo. His passing due to COVID-19 marked the end of an era for Brazilian technological art, leaving a legacy of innovation and experimentation.
