Item description
Plaster statue from the mid-20th century depicting Saint Catherine of Alexandria. Work that evidently reproduces a 16th-century original of Flemish taste. All-round finished sculpture in beautiful patina, intentionally painted and oak tint patinated. The saint is depicted with some of her typical iconographic elements, including the open book and sword, while at her feet we find Emperor Maximilian. The story goes that the emperor was in Alexandria to celebrate a pagan occasion. The celebration included the sacrifice of some Christians, and Catherine intervened to ask for clemency. To counter the saint's words, the emperor summoned fifty wise men but Catherine succeeded in converting them. Maximilian then tried to bribe her and, after numerous attempts at torture to unsuccessfully obtain a conversion, she was finally beheaded. Statue showing minor missing and chips (see photos). Structurally solid work, overall in good state of preservation with some signs of time.
