Item description
A pair of gilded wooden torch holders hand-carved in Sicily in 1820, in original condition, with signs of use and age visible on the photos. Candlesticks were decorative holders used in churches or private churches to hold candles or lamps during religious services. These candlesticks were usually made of high quality wood, usually walnut or mahogany, and decorated with carved and gilded motifs in the Empire style. The design of the torch holders was characterised by a circular base supporting a slender shaft. The gilding of the torches was done by applying gold leaf, which gave them a luxurious and refined appearance. These torch holders were very popular in Sicily in the mid-19th century, when the Empire style was very much in vogue. Today, these lampholders are considered works of art and are highly sought after by collectors and antique enthusiasts. They represent an excellent example of Sicilian craftsmanship and the aesthetic taste of the era in which they were created.
