Item description

Pair of modernist chairs by the Carioca design pioneer Sérgio Rodrigues, in ebonised beech wood covered in velvet. The chairs synthesise a unique combination of Shakers, De Stijl and Japanese influences. Rodrigues reinterprets them through a distinctly Brazilian lens that favours indigenous woods and refuses to sacrifice comfort on the altar of design, instead using comfort as a guide for the evolution of a new style. The extra-high curved triangular backrest comfortably supports the body and culminates in a sculptural headrest reminiscent of the takamakura of the Edo period. It is pivoted on a geometric frame that narrows between the front and rear legs to form a trapezoid, highlighting the negative space between the diagonal stretchers and culminating in the hyper-cut legs. These elegant chairs are unique among Rodrigues' works for their lightness and elongated vertical proportions. The chairs have original but worn upholstery; we recommend replacing it with new. The wooden part is in good condition.
