Item description

Tea Trolley 901 cart attributed to Alvar Aalto for Artek, 1960s. This is a tea cart inspired by British culture and Japanese woodworking. The lightweight birch structure, guided by large wheels with black rubber rings, makes it agile and easy to move. Suitable for serving tea, coffee and beverages. Hugo Alvar Henrik Aalto (Kuortane, February 3, 1898 - Helsinki, May 11, 1976) was a Finnish architect and designer, one of the most important figures in 20th-century architecture and remembered-along with Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, Walter Gropius, Frank Lloyd Wright and Le Corbusier-as one of the masters of the Modern Movement. The name Artek has always evoked a design icon. And it could not be otherwise since the founder, Alvar Aalto, was one of the pioneers of Scandinavian design. Established in 1935 to create and promote furniture designed by the Finnish architect, Artek soon transformed its mission, thanks to the contributions of its three other partners, Aino Aalto, Maire Gullichsen, and Nils-Gustav Hahl. The founders pursued the intent to produce objects that integrated art and technology, as the name suggests. Artek has always favored the use of natural materials, starting with wood, the raw material that underlies Alvar Aalto's work. From the master's experiments with curved wood and solid wood joints come objects with fluid, organic lines and extraordinary durability. Indestructible stools, armchairs, tables and chairs made in the 1930s are still in use today, and the minimalist design makes them suitable for any environment, from residential to public facilities. Artek objects have always been mass-produced and hand-finished by skilled craftsmen. Production is mostly concentrated in the Turku, Finland, factory, where carpenters, who specialize in hand-bending birch, making laminated wood, plywood and veneer, and lacquering, produce the finished pieces without the help of middlemen.
