Item description

Pair of DS3 model chairs designed by the Scottish architect Charles Rennie Mackintosh in 1918 and produced by Cassina, in the ‘I Maestri’ collection, from 1975. In black open-pore varnished ash, with straw seat and mother-of-pearl inserts. All chairs are marked Cassina and numbered. The chairs are all in excellent condition, with slight signs of use. Charles Rennie Mackintosh (Glasgow, 7 June 1868 - London, 10 December 1928) was a Scottish architect, designer and painter. An exponent of the so-called Glasgow movement, he was the most important exponent of Art Nouveau in the United Kingdom, for some he is considered one of the forerunners of this movement. Cassina Spa is an Italian company operating in the contemporary furniture sector, founded in 1927 in Meda by Cesare and Umberto Cassina. The main activity is woodworking, in-house, for the production of coffee tables. Over the years the company expanded, especially in the post-war period, also thanks to collaborations with external architects who contributed their experience and research. In the 1950s, Cassina moved from handcrafted production to serial production, adopting the logic of industrial design. A change also brought about by the commissioning of furniture for the interiors of large cruise ships.
