Item description
Pair of wooden chairs mod. 66 by Alvar Aalto for Artek, 1960s. Artek's unmistakable 66 chair is a classic and versatile design, designed in 1935 by the brilliant Finnish designer Alvar Aalto. Prized for its simple and universal character, it marks the tradition of classic wooden kitchen and bar chairs. The wide, handle-like back makes it particularly comfortable, flexible and easy to move; while the choice of Finnish birch wood, used for the structure, gives it lightness and strength. Perfect for any environment, Aalto's 66 chair is a pure expression of the designer's great mastery of wood bending. Hugo Alvar Henrik Aalto (Kuortane, February 3, 1898 - Helsinki, May 11, 1976) was a Finnish architect and designer, one of the most important figures in 20th-century architecture and remembered, along with Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, Walter Gropius, Frank Lloyd Wright and Le Corbusier, as one of the masters of the Modern Movement. The name Artek has always evoked a design icon. And it could not be otherwise since the founder, Alvar Aalto, was one of the pioneers of Scandinavian design. Founded in 1935 to create and promote furniture designed by the Finnish architect, Artek soon transformed its mission, thanks to the contributions of its three other partners, Aino Aalto, Maire Gullichsen and Nils-Gustav Hahl. The founders pursued the goal of producing objects that integrated art and technology, as the name suggests. Artek has always favored the use of natural materials, starting with wood, the raw material that underlies Aalto's work. The master's experiments with curved wood and solid wood joints give rise to objects with fluid and organic lines, characterized by extraordinary durability. Indestructible stools, armchairs, tables and chairs made in the 1930s are still in use today, and the minimalist design makes them suitable for any environment, from residential to public facilities. Artek objects have always been mass-produced and hand-finished by skilled craftsmen. Production is mostly concentrated in the Turku, Finland, factory, where carpenters, who specialize in hand-bending birch, making laminated wood, plywood and veneer, and lacquering, produce the finished pieces without the help of middlemen.
