Item description

Follower of David Teniers the Younger, 17th century, St. Anthony at Prayer, oil on copper, 38 x 30 cm, with frame 43 x 35 cm. From the end of the 16th century, the complex symbolism used by Bosch gave way to a proliferation of rather suggestive demons. Teniers also adapted, but stuck to a coherent iconographic code, e.g. the tools and pipe that the monsters carried were objects from everyday life, and could therefore be recognised by the seventeenth-century viewer. Its fame also favoured the proliferation of reinterpretations, such as the copper depicting the saint praying in his cave, where he spent the first 35 years of his hermitage. This version lacks the usual demonic creatures carrying jugs of wine, all allusions to the sensory pleasures of life. The main comparison can be made with the version of the saint signed by Teniers in a private collection, mirroring our own. It can be assumed that the Flemish artist who made this version based himself on one of the many engravings circulating in Flanders and northern Europe in general at the time. David Teniers the Younger (1610-1690) was the first of these masters to depict drinkers and smokers, card and dice players in an often humorous vein, drawing inspiration from everyday reality. Given the stylistic and thematic characteristics of the works examined, a realisation at the hand of a painter active in his circle can be identified. David Teniers the Younger was born in Antwerp in 1610. He received his first rudiments of painting from his father, before being influenced by the painting of his peer and friend Adriaen Brouwer (1605-1638), a painter of bright and vivid tones, attentive to detail and detail. In 1632 he was enrolled in the Guild of St. Luke. His pictures of Flemish folk life, influenced by his friend Brouwer, enjoyed considerable success and were also collected by the aristocratic classes and the ruling houses themselves.
