Item description

Blue and white Delftware beer mug, 1733. The date and initials FCS are on the lid. It is painted in blue with a continuous landscape with plants and flowers. Short stripes are applied to the sides of the handle. The flat, round lid is connected to the handle with a two-jaw hinge and has a spherical thumb rest. The foot of the tankard is set in a pewter ring. Faience beer mugs were produced in the Netherlands starting from the mid-17th century. The shape was taken from pewter specimens. The production of beer mugs was particularly extensive in the 17th century. Production seems to have stopped in the second quarter of the 18th century, almost no beer mugs are known after that period. The indicated width includes the handle.
