Item description
Polychrome wooden sculpture representing Saint Roch. A native of Montpellier, France, after selling all his possessions he set out for Rome and travelled through Italy curing and comforting plague victims. Although news of his life is few and imprecise, he is one of the most beloved and popular saints. Invoked since the Middle Ages as a protector from the terrible scourge of the plague, so much so that the Council of Constance in 1414 invoked him as a saint for deliverance from the epidemic that had broken out. He is the protector of infectious patients, invalids and prisoners. He has as his emblem the dog, the cross on the side of the heart, and the angel, symbols of the pilgrim. St. Roch is one of the saints most loved and celebrated by popular piety, although despite this great popularity, information about his life is very fragmentary. Italian provenance, 17th century. Restoration in use. Shipped in a wooden case.
