Item description

Four stools model Mezzadro by Achille and Pier Giacomo Castiglioni, produced by Zanotta in the 1970s. Manufacturer's label under the seat. The Mezzadro project perhaps most clearly expresses the desire to use a part of an existing object, confirming its form but shifting its place and mode of use: to use the seat of a tractor, designed in the early 20th century, as a stool to be used in our homes. The prototype was presented in the exhibition held at Villa Olmo (CO ) in 1957. It consists of four elements: seat, fixing pin, leaf spring and crossbar. Even in the particular fastening system we find a familiar object, used for locking bicycle wheels, a large wing nut that allows everything to be tightened without the use of screwdrivers or spanners. The seat is made of pressed and painted sheet metal; the leaf spring (stainless steel), which supports the seat, also present on the tractor but turned the other way to absorb the jolts of the farm vehicle on the ground, here serves to make the seat more elastic. The wooden crosspiece (solid beech), vaguely resembling a yoke, provides the other two support points necessary for seat stability.
