Item description

Wood and woven cane armchair by Emanuele Rambaldi, 1950s. Rambaldi is best known as a painter and participated in one of the first modern art movements in Liguria. In addition to being a painter, he was a draftsman and engraver who won major national and international awards. His few surviving furniture designs show his artistic skills just like his paintings. The design of this armchair is characterized by a refined understanding of materials and forms. It has a more traditional design language of clean lines and solid structure infused with 20th century Italian and international artistic influences. In design, Rambaldi has cultivated a controlled, cultured and logical sense of proportion and structure, using the natural possibilities of wood. Therefore, there is a great balance of lines and use of the natural beauty of fruit wood, which is particularly evident in the carved backrest and armrests. Due to the many individual elements of which the backrest and lower structure are composed, the overall impression is one of lightness and airiness with an inherent elegance. The legs are cleverly arranged and the wider front balances the backrest perfectly. The seat is composed of a tightly woven cane panel that adds much material interest to the design. Elegant tapered legs complete the look, infusing modernity and elegance. This small armchair was manufactured by A. Canciani in Chiavari, Liguria. Rambaldi represents one of the most original and lyrically intense voices in Ligurian painting of the 1920s. He was a sensitive observer of the new influences that swept through Italian and European painting culture in the 20th century, which also applies to this small armchair. Seat height: 41 cm.
