Etching by Bernardino Rosaspina (Venice 1797 – Bologna 1882) depicting a view of the Castle of Ferrara. Bernardino was born into a famous family of artists: his father Giuseppe (Bologna 1765 – 1832) and his uncle Francesco (Montescudo, Rimini 1762 – Bologna 1841) were engravers, founder of the chair of engraving at the Academy of Fine Arts in Bologna. His style was influenced by the scenographic-quadraturist tradition, by the language of Felice Giani (San Sebastiano Curone 1758 – Rome 1823) and above all by eighteenth-century landscape painting. He specialized in engravings of views, creating two series: one of 33 plates dedicated to Romagna "Vedute di Romagna" (1831-1836) and the other to Tuscany "Viaggio storico pittorico ossia guida della Toscana" (1832). The sheet is a representative document of the reality of the time. In front of the Estense Castle, symbol of the city with its four towers, some women are depicted washing and hanging clothes in the sun and other men walking. The intersection of lines creates deep chiaroscuro contrasts. The title is engraved at the bottom center and on the right: Ber. Rosaspina dis: and inc:. Excellent print. Excellent state of conservation, except for minimal restorations on the reverse. Wide margins.
