Faun and Bacchante, Flemish oil painting on canvas, 17th century

Flemish painting from the second half of the 17th century. Oil on canvas depicting a fascinating mythological subject: a Faun with a basket of fruit and a Bacchante. Painting attributable to a follower of Peter Paul Rubens as it is a very high quality copy of an original exhibited today in Antwerp. Note the fine workmanship of the fruit basket, an amazing still life full of meticulous naturalistic details. The faun who looks towards us, thus breaking the fourth wall, is splendid. Next to him a girl or bacchante approaches mischievously. A painting of notable pictorial quality, particularly noteworthy is the masterful use of the chiaroscuro technique to create plasticity, volume and depth. Work that has been restretched and undergone restoration with replacement of the frame and restoration of color in some small points. Overall in excellent state of conservation.
