Claude Gellée, known as Claude Lorrain (Chamagne, c. 1600 - Rome, 1682), was a French painter, draughtsman and engraver, considered one of the undisputed masters of the ideal landscape of the 17th century. His work, characterized by serene and luminous atmospheres, immersed in idealized nature and often populated by mythological or biblical figures, profoundly influenced landscape painting for centuries to come. Born in Lorraine, Lorrain moved at a very young age to Italy, where he spent most of his life. In Rome, he entered the workshop of landscape painter Agostino Tassi and devoted himself to the in-depth study of nature, drawing inspiration from the Roman countryside and the city's surroundings. His fame grew rapidly and he soon became one of the most sought-after artists by collectors and patrons of the time. Lorrain's landscapes are distinguished by their compositional harmony, skillful use of light, and masterful rendering of atmospheric effects. His canvases are often characterized by an aerial perspective that dilates space and invites the eye to delve into an idealized nature, where classical ruins, ancient temples, and mythological figures come together in a poetic and evocative vision.
