Item description
A fine oil painting with a scene of a brawl at a well in San Stae Venice. The painting is signed and dated Giacomelli 1888. The painting measures 105 x65 cm. The author, known mainly for his romantic historicist subjects and his love of the Risorgimento theme, was also a portrait painter, active mainly in Venice but also in Turin, where he worked as court painter at the Savoy court from 1839 to 1849. We find him enrolled at the Venetian Academy in 1830, where he began to exhibit successfully, making a name for himself in 1838 with the painting of a historical subject entitled Giovanna Grey giustiziata (Giovanna Grey executed) and other paintings inspired by the story of Doge Marino Faliero, which was particularly in vogue at the time.
