Item description
Large Italian painting from the first half of the 17th century. Oil on canvas work of the Tuscan school depicting a splendid religious subject, Christ and the Samaritan woman at the well. Jesus is on a journey and decides to stop for a drink. He approaches a well and asks a Samaritan woman for a drink. For the Jews, the Samaritans were heretics, so they avoided them and did not speak to him. Christ is not bothered by this and the woman reacts with amazement. Painting of extraordinary pictorial quality in all respects. Note the elegance of the drapery, the variety of colours, the beauty of the landscape and very fine details such as Jesus' halo, which looks almost like a jewel. Exceptional coeval frame in carved, lacquered and gilded wood, with a few small faults and signs of time (see photo). It has an antique wax seal on the back (see photo). Work that has undergone restoration with re-staining, replacement of the frame and repainting in some small places. Overall in good state of preservation. Light painting H 128 x W 99 cm.
