On May 25, 2021, the ADI Design Museum, one of the largest museums in Europe dedicated to design, will make its debut: 5,000 square meters of exhibition space housing all the pieces that have won the Compasso d'Oro Award, in the square of the same name with entrance from Via Ceresio 7 or Via Bramante 42.
It is a self-generating museum that is constantly renewed in its contents and collection: at each edition, new acquisitions are added to the historical pieces of the permanent collection, over 2000 objects awarded since 1954 that open from many boxes of wonders.
The former industrial area between via Ceresio and via Bramante has finally completed the preparation of the 3 naves of the 1930s space that was once a depot for horse-drawn streetcars and an electricity distribution plant.
The space is informative and research-oriented, it tells about itself to the general public but it is also a reference point for the whole design community and it unfolds in temporary exhibitions, spaces for business meetings, design lessons, and public events, library, ADI headquarters and historical archive, workshops for children, a bookshop and the inevitable area dedicated to catering.
Even the new logo becomes an instrument of narration of the new place: abandoning Bob Noorda's Helvetica, linked to the specificity of the Association since its origins, Michele Provinciali's design for the X Triennale in 1954 becomes the symbol of this new reality, embellished by the 2 initials of the name in English "Design Museum" and recovering the A as the Golden Compass but simplified compared to the original design by Albe Steiner.
