Item description
Large Flemish painting from the second half of the 16th century. Oil work on panel depicting a very fascinating evangelical episode, the Vocation of Saint Matthew. Painting of extraordinary pictorial quality and brilliant colours. The scene is set in an interior full of meticulous details, with a strong sense of perspective and a theatrical use of light. The figures are solid and sculpted, with dynamic poses and expressive gestures. The protagonist of the composition is Matthew, depicted as a tax collector, as he turns towards Jesus who invites him to follow him. Some characters remain with their heads bowed, distracted from their occupations, while in the background we see the splendid architecture of Jerusalem in the distance. Painting attributable to the workshop of Jan Sanders Van Hemessen (1504-1567), lacking authentication. A pupil of Hendrick van Cleve, he worked mainly in Antwerp and became a prestigious member of the Guild of Saint Luke, the most important artists' guild in Flanders. 20th century frame in carved and gilded wood, with some signs of aging. Work already restored with new parking on the back. It has some discolouration (see photo), overall in good state of conservation. Light painting H 124 x W 166 cm.
