Item description
Ancient Italian painting from the first half of the 17th century. Oil work on canvas depicting a Saint Jerome of notable pictorial quality. Painting attributable to a Caravaggio painter of the Neapolitan school from the workshop of Jusepe de Ribera (1591-1652), lacking authenticity. His style generated a particular pictorial current, tenebrism, which was characterized by an exasperated representation of reality, violent and brutal, accentuated by epidermal, anatomical and psychic details. In fact, we see a Saint Jerome in the study with a powerful chiaroscuro effect that creates plasticity, volume and sculpts the figure of the Saint with light. We find all his characteristic iconographic symbols such as the memento mori skull and the great book, as a Doctor of the Church and first translator of the Bible into Latin. The Saint is wrapped in a splendid purple cloth while on the left we glimpse the galero, the cardinal's hat. 20th century frame in carved and gilded wood, beautifully decorated. Painting already restored with relining, replacement of the frame and color recovery in small spots. Overall, it is in a good state of conservation. Painting light H 118 x W 96 cm.
