Item description

Ancient Italian painting from the second half of the 17th century. Oil work on canvas depicting a splendid bucolic landscape with animals and shepherd, of great pictorial quality. In the foreground we find some magnificently painted goats that seem to be observing us, thus breaking the fourth wall. In the distance, however, we see a shepherd on horseback with his dog at his side, both seem to be moving away towards the sunset and giving depth to the composition. Painting attributable to the German painter Philipp Peter Roos known as Rosa da Tivoli (1657-1706), lacking authenticity. A pupil of Giacinto Brandi, he worked mainly in Italy and bought a house in Tivoli, which earned him his famous nickname. He raised many animals and then painted them in the Roman countryside, with intense brushstrokes and a strong contrast between light and shadow. 20th century frame in carved and painted wood, with some signs of aging. Work already restored with relining, replacement of the frame and color recovery in small spots. Overall in good state of conservation. Painting light H 75 x W 93 cm.
