Item description
Painter and engraver, nicknamed "Flemish Thomas", active in Rome around 1640, in Haarlem and for a short period in London. His style falls within that of the Bamboccianti, Dutch painters working in Rome in the mid-17th century. He is remembered for genre scenes set in Italianate landscapes, ruins or urban contexts. The subject is taken from The Life of Lazarillo of Tormes, of his fortunes and adversities. Spanish story by an anonymous author written in the first person as a single long letter. It tells the story of the life of a young beggar, Lazarus of Tormes, set in 16th century Spain. It is a fierce criticism with anti-clerical implications, branded as heretical by the Inquisition. At the center of the scene, the elderly blind beggar, whom Lazzarillo accompanies and exploits in a series of thefts and subterfuges, is chased by a dog and crashes into a column. Three figures observe the scene taking shelter behind the column, on the right some women near a fountain. The background is occupied by a staircase, some buildings and the facade of the Roman church of Santa Maria in Aracoeli. The short and vibrant sign, never crossed, thickens in the shadowed areas almost to simulate the effect of a drawing. The monogram TW is engraved at the bottom left of the column. Probable III/III state as indicated in the specimen preserved at the MET. Excellent, well-contrasted impression on light wire-free paper. Posthumous edition. Small margins beyond the line. In excellent condition except for some creases at the corners visible mostly on the reverse. On the reverse written in pen: Fochy Enacht (?) 1817 X 12.
