Item description
Oil on canvas. Signed and dated lower left. Eliseo Sala is celebrated by contemporary critics as a prominent portraitist in the Lombardy panorama. In fact, he carried out many important commissions on behalf of royal, noble and upper-middle-class families, as well as prestigious political figures. In his maturity, his art was oriented almost exclusively towards veristic portraiture and historical Romanticism, rendered with immediate painting, of extreme chromatic refinement, rich in chiaroscuro and an in-depth psychological investigation, which often reproduces the ideals of the Risorgimento that were typical of his personal beliefs. Presented here is the artist\'s portrait of a lady of the wealthy bourgeoisie, which well expresses the intense capacity for realism and psychological introspection that emanates from the woman\'s gaze. The painting is presented in a 19th-century gold frame.
