"Christian charity" painting Att. Francesco Furini, 17th century

Opera: "Christian charity" Attribution: Francesco Furini (Florence 1603 - 1646) Dating: 17th century Technique: oil on canvas measures: canvas only: 80 x 100 cm; With frame (coeval): 104 x 124 cm conservation status: good. The painting was reined, clean and subjected to a light conservative restoration. Original frame coeval, in good condition. The painting depicts a young mother in progress to breastfeed a child, surrounded by two other putti in a noble and theatrical architectural context, partially framed by a red drape. The setting suggests an allegorical scene, in line with the theme of Christian charity, theological virtue frequently represented in the sacred painting of the seventeenth century. The attribution to Francesco Furini is based on stylistic characteristics attributable to his production: the intense expression of the faces, the softness of the meat, the elegance of the female poses and the calibrated use of lights and shadows. The composition evokes an intimate and refined atmosphere, typical of Tuscan painting of the early seventeenth century, where Furini emerges as a sensitive interpreter of Baroque spirituality. The accurate draper, the chromatic balance and the background architecture are elements that strengthen the attribution, placing the painting in the middle of the artistic maturity of the Florentine painter. The work also reflects a Caravaggesque influence in the luminous contrasts, however mediated by a classic grace.
