Benito Boccolari (Modena 1888 - Modena 1964) was a sculptor, ceramist and engraver Italian. After a year of academic studies he left for Turin to continue his training at the sculptor Leonardo Bistolfi. Initially joined the poetic symbolism of the master and then detached and enter the twentieth century movement. This movement was born in Milan in 1922 around the figure of Margherita Sarfatti by the will of seven artists who, although coming from different experiences, wanted a return to order, overcoming currents such as Cubism and Futurism through a look at classical antiquity. This return to order and simplicity of form is visible in the woodcuts of Boccolari, who absorbed the technique thanks to his study of the woodcuts of Adolfo De Carolis. His first woodcuts, by Boccolari, date back to 1913 and today there are about two hundred of them. Boccolari was also an assiduous collaborator of L'Eroica by Ettore Cozzani and of the Classici del ridere, the famous editions of Angelo Fortunato Formiggini. The ten woodcut plates are part of an album, entitled Dall'Alto (From Above) inspired by the example of the Swiss woodcut artist Felix Vallotton (Lausanne 1865 - Neuilly-sur-Seine1925). The album consists of a paperback bound by ribbon and illustrated with woodcuts in red engraved by the author, 31 pages and ten illustrations protected by tissue paper with number and title. with a preface by Francesco Sapori. Second edition with two plates added since the first edition of 1922. These sheets show scenes of daily life, represented through an elevated point of view, as from a modern drone. The artist confesses, as written in the preface by Francesco Sapori, that he did not want to express anything great or profound but to match the content of the prints to the titles. The scenes, played on the chiaroscuro contrast, represent everyday life in a theatrical key, some contain the theme of provinciality others that of death and are treated with simplicity in form but with particular attention to detail. Excellent state of preservation.
