Item description
Beautiful Japanese painting on silk dating back to the 1940s, depicting two carp in water, one red and one grey. White Bakelite finials. Very good condition, with small signs of age. In oriental culture, and more specifically in Japanese culture, the koi carp is a highly valued and esteemed animal, not only for its beauty as a coloured fish but above all for what it symbolises, which is mainly perseverance. The carp is also evocative of fidelity in marriage and good luck in general. The carp ("Koi" in Japanese) is always on the move and is considered one of the fish with the most energy and strength. It is also able to swim against the current, which is interpreted both as a nonconformist representation (the strength not to follow the current, but to follow one's own path regardless of the rest) and as the strength to overcome adversity. A Chinese legend (the land of origin of the carp symbol) tells of the ascent of a carp up the Yellow River to the Dragon Gate, after which it transforms into a dragon and acquires the gift of immortality; the meaning of this legend is linked to the strength of will and positive change, and merit, after one's own efforts and sacrifices, emphasising that anyone, with the strength of will, can also achieve important results and accomplish great feats.
