Item description

Charming and rare English Chippendale style “Antique Master” or "King" chair with armrests; it is made of walnut of the best quality; the back has an elaborate and refined design; the armrests have a pleasantly harmonious and elegant curvilinear pattern, at the top of the knuckles have small protuberances for a better grip; the front legs are of rare beauty, they have at the junction with the seat rich wooden decorations in the shape of leaves and end with claw and ball feet; this type of foot, of Chinese derivation, which consists of a dragon claw grasping a pearl, is probably the best known and characteristic decorative element of English furniture, often linked to the name of the famous English cabinetmaker Thomas Chippendale. Unfortunately, the right leg is missing part of the decoration (see photo), the chair retains its charm equally, but that's why we put it on sale at a price much lower than this type of rare chair. The seat has been upholstered, not very recently, in pure silk shantung, a very fine fabric, made with a unique yarn in nature, the appearance is rough, characterized by knots produced by twin cocoons (a single silkworm spins two cocoons), what technically could be called a defect, becomes instead merit that gives the fabric a natural irregularity really classy. The chair was handcrafted between 1865and 1870 in a cabinetmaker's workshop near London. King or Antique Master chairs are generally larger than normal, and would have been made for Masonic leaders, schoolmasters, council leaders, and heads of families; anyone who owned and sat in a Master chair secured a position of authority over the group. Towards the end of the 18th century, an English cabinetmaker named Thomas Chippendale invented a series of furnishing accessories characterized by a unique and refined style, called Chippendale. It is one of the most famous styles born in England and appreciated to this day. The particularity of the Chippendale style concerns above all their origin and therefore, the artistic currents that have influenced their design. The author of these furnishing complements has made these artifacts taking into account the typically French aesthetics of Louis XV furniture and the Rococo style and has made simplified "English" versions of these works. Chippendale furniture is manufactured using the highest quality materials and techniques, therefore, it is resistant and durable over time. These peculiarities, combined with a refined and elegant aesthetic taste, still make them highly appreciated and sought after today. Once placed inside a room, these furnishings are in fact able to give the spaces a particular sense of warmth that makes them welcoming and comfortable. The Chippendale furnishings, while having an extremely classic design, can be easily inserted into a modern context, as they are still very contemporary. Our chair with all of its delightful period details exudes exceptional quality craftsmanship and with its classic shape easily adapts to any style of decor.
