Item description

Six SD9 Luisella chairs by Franco Albini for Poggi, Italy 1960s. Born in Milan in 1905, Franco Albini was an Italian architect, urban planner and furniture designer, active between the 1930s and 1960s. He studied at the Milan Polytechnic and completed his apprenticeship under architect and designer Gio Ponti, playing a key role in the formulation of the Italian Rationalist movement in the years before the Second World War. Albini collaborated with several well-known mid-century manufacturers, including Cassina, Arflex, Poggi, Arteluce, Brionvega and Knoll, and many of his designs are still in production today. He has received numerous awards for his work, including three Compasso d'Oro. The professional history of furniture designer Roberto Poggi is both exemplary and atypical. With his brother Ezio, he infuses the craftsmanship of his father Carlo, founder of the carpentry workshop of the same name in Pavia, into a production of innovative furniture in which it is possible to read both the legacy of the Lombard manufacturing tradition and the stimuli of the post-war Milanese architectural and artistic culture. Starting in the late 1940s, the thirty-year association with Franco Albini testifies to Poggi's ability to share and refine the architect's methodological approach and expressive tension, enhancing them in refined mass-produced furniture, destined to become unmistakable icons of Italian design.
