This painting depicts a scene of life in the fields with two women at work: one of them is dedicating herself to the hay, the other one has a freshly milked milk under her arm. The model from which Pergola draws inspiration is the French artist Léon Lhermitte, who loved to portray rural scenes of peasants at work so much as to be called "the painter of the harvesters".
