Item description
Private readings by Angelo Granati, Italy 2013. It is his reinterpretation of a large antique painting 'Comparisons' by Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema. Oil on panel 15 x 25 cm, gilded bronze frame from 1860, exterior measurements 37 x 29 cm. The miniature oil painting on panel is an original, refined and valuable homage to the masterpiece of Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema, one of the most acclaimed artists of decadentism, known for his portraits of scenes of life in antiquity, particularly those set in the Pompeian era. With the 2007 exhibition 'Alma Tadema and the Nostalgia for Antiquity' at the National Museum, Naples wished to reciprocate the Dutch painter's love for the city and its archaeological sites. It was on that occasion that Angelo Granati was directly inspired by the works of the transalpine master, allowing himself to be enchanted by the decadent taste for the past, the peculiar light, the indolent atmosphere and the preferably female subjects.
