Item description

Pair of Amanta armchairs by Mario Bellini for C&B Italia, 1970s. The solution of the upholstery separated from the plastic material structural part sets the standard for new-generation seating and transforms a technical element, to be hidden from view, into something highly expressive and characterizing. The supporting structure is made of molded polyester and fiberglass and the cushions are attached to it with a system of threaded pins. This model is an update of the Barcelona chair by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe. Interesting features are the backrest cut of the shell that increases its resilience and the spherical rubber feet that maximize elasticity and lighten the overall appearance of the armchair. The armchairs are in good condition: one of them has some streaks on the fabric, probably due to movement over the years. Mario Bellini (Milan, 1935) is an Italian designer. He graduated in architecture in 1959 from the Milan Polytechnic, where his professors were Ernesto Nathan Rogers, Gio Ponti and Piero Portaluppi, then dean of the Faculty of Architecture. In the 1960s he began his activity in the field of design, opening a professional studio. From 1961 to 1963 he was director of design at Rinascente, the famous and prestigious department store chain. Since 1963 he has held the position of chief design consultant at the Olivetti company. From 1969 to 1971 he was president of the Industrial Design Association and in 1978 he was a research and design consultant for the car manufacturer Renault. From 1986 to 1991 he was editor of Domus. From 1979 to 2019 he was a member of the Scientific Council of the design section of the Milan Triennale. C&B Italia S.p.A. is an Italian company founded in 1966 in Novedrate, a manufacturer of furniture, furnishings and other objects for the home. It was born from the meeting of Cesare Cassina and Piero Ambrogio Busnelli.
