Item description

Zelda coffee table by Sergio Asti for Poltronova, 1960s. Veneered wood structure and top. Asti studied as an architect at the Milan Polytechnic from 1947 to 1953 and opened his own studio in the same year he graduated. Among the first Italian industrial designers, he became a founding member of the UAM (Unione Artisti Moderni). He is known as one of the figures who worked on experimenting with form and space, helping to make designs more ergonomic. Asti's creations are considered typical of the organic design produced in postwar Milan. He worked alongside the most important companies of his time, such as Artemide, Arteluce and Martinelli Luce. Sergio Asti won the Compasso d'Oro in 1955, 1956, 1959, 1962 and 1970. Many of the works he designed are now part of the collections of prestigious design museums around the world such as MoMA in New York. Poltronova is a company that has made history: it was founded by Sergio Cammilli in 1957 in Tuscany; in its early years a fundamental contribution was made by Ettore Sottsass, who became its art director in 1958.
