Item description

Original lithographic print depicting jockey Danny Maher for Vanity Fair, September 10, 1903. Complete with briar-root frame. The caption reads "Danny". Print is in very good condition with clean margins. Daniel Aloysius Maher (1881-1916) was an American Hall of Fame jockey who also became champion in Britain. Vanity Fair was a British weekly newspaper published from 1868 to 1914. Founded by Thomas Gibson Bowles, it offered its readers articles on fashion, current affairs, theater, books, social events and the latest scandals. A full-page color lithograph of a contemporary celebrity or dignitary appeared in most issues and it is for these caricatures that Vanity Fair is best known today.
