Item description

An exceptional and magnificent extending table in Art Deco style. The sumptuous and sturdy Sapele wood base, with its distinctive and elegant shape, supports a large and massive top also made of Sapele, forming an imposing and majestic whole! The table is extendable, but did not have the two original extension leaves, so we had them made by our team of craftsmen. They are made of wood and fit the table perfectly (see photo). The width of each of them is 40 cm, so with the two extensions mounted, the table reaches a size of 240 cm. The table has also been hand-treated using antique techniques by our team of specialist restorers and is in excellent condition. The most captivating part of this object is the marvellous and fascinating table top made of Sapele wood with a unique and special workmanship performed entirely by hand, which includes meticulous levelling and a special polishing carried out in 12 steps with a cotton ball soaked in shellac, straw oil and pumice stone powder. These techniques allowed us to enhance the chromaticity and flaming of Sapele wood, giving our table a unique and exclusive elegance and refinement. Sapele (or Sapelli or Sapeli), is a valuable wood species with a reddish hue native to West Africa; it has characteristics similar to mahogany and in some applications even better than mahogany itself. It is a strong, hard, compact and rather flexible wood. Due in part to its attractive appearance, it is used as a substitute for mahogany for high-quality furniture, such as cabinets, tables, chairs and chests of drawers, for fine cabinet-making, for the construction of musical instruments and for furnishing luxury boats. Sapele is characterised by a colour tone ranging from red-brown to dark brown, often with darker veins and black stripes. Its texture is uniform and has a lustrous appearance. In addition, sapele is known for its strength and hardness. It has good impact resistance and durability, making it suitable for use in furniture and objects subject to mechanical stress. The table was made between 1930 and 1935 in a cabinet-making workshop in Bordeaux, in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region, a city that boasted a tradition in furniture production in the 18th and 19th centuries. The furniture produced in Bordeaux ranged from Louis XV to Neoclassical and Art Deco, with a focus on fine woodwork. The table has been carefully restored. Our table, thanks to its demodé charm and its qualities of elegance and refinement, is able to give suggestions of bygone days and exclusivity, discreetly combining tradition and functionality. The table has been completely restored and is therefore in excellent condition. Dimensions length 160 cm, width 100 cm, height 74 cm, length 240 cm. For all our shipments we use special packaging materials (custom-made wooden crates, polystyrene, etc.) for maximum protection and safety of the objects.
