Item description

Stringa coffee table by Gae Aulenti for Poltronova, 1960s. In September 1977, Poltronova of Agliana (PT) was celebrating 20 years of its activity that sprang from the intuitions of its founder Sergio Cammilli, an artist and courageous leader of one of the companies that made the history of Italian design. Says PierCarlo Santini in the book "Fare mobii con," "What happens here and there in many Italian centers occurs in Agliana, where on strains of traditions of proven craftsmanship, in the service, however, of tired and passive reproductive operations, authentic needs for renewal and creativity are grafted. That craftsmanship, differently intentioned and innervated with vital themes, becomes a valuable means and contribution not only in the technological arena, but in order to precisely formal functions and meanings... (omissis). In 1957 Cammilli has behind him attendance at the Florence Art Institute where he practiced sculpture." He sensed the change taking place..." And again "The period from 1960 to 1965--the one in which the Stringa group including the coffee table was produced--is an exciting time for Cammilli. He recalls, "I was not a company man who would take a design from an architect's office and bring it to the laboratory for execution. The design, once in Agliana was examined screened and many times completely redone.... You could see the piece being born through making, unmaking, adjusting, raising, lowering....". It was in this spirit, in 1965, that a collaboration was born with the youngest and most distinguished designer architects including Gae Aulenti, who designed the Locus Solus group for the garden and the "Stringa group" version in chromed metal for the home. The Stringa coffee table consists of a pair of chrome-plated steel tubulars that after forming a symmetrical semicircle on the ground rise up to support a transparent glass top protected by four suction cups. In excellent condition; it shows no signs of wear or flaws.
