Item description
The history of the Flokati carpet is given in the book 'The Elements of a Home' by design historian Amy Azzarito. According to Azzarito, Alexander the Great used flokati in his campaign in Egypt and Asia Minor in the 4th century to warm the soldiers' tents. In fact, the Flokati carpet is not typical of the 1970s, despite being popular in the American domestic aesthetic of those years, but is of Greek origin. The iconic long-pile carpet was first devised in the village of Samarina, whose inhabitants were mainly shepherds of goats and sheep, the primary source of local trade and goods. Around the 5th century A.D., shepherds began using sheep's wool for protection and warmth during the winter, and it seems that the creation of the first Flokati was by chance: the Samarina shepherds had left one of their woven wool blankets in the waters of the Pindus Mountains, unattended for almost two days, and on their return they found the wool typical of what would become one of the most famous carpets in history. In fact, the Samarina shepherds discovered that the woven wool of their blankets, if left under flowing water, strengthened the backing of the blanket and the pile became even more voluminous. The production process is still called 'waterfall'. Probably the imposition in the homes of many, especially rich and upper middle class Americans, came about thanks to Jackie Kennedy Onassis who, after her marriage to the Greek tycoon Aristotle Onassis, used the Flokati carpet in her homes especially in the Casa Rosa in Skorpios which was their private island in the Ionian Sea. The Flokati carpet we propose is a typical product of Greek handicraft and is made exclusively of pure virgin wool. It does not felt and dust does not lodge in its rich pile and is treated with permanent anti-mothermic. The washing method uses lukewarm water by beating strongly (see guarantee). Showroom product, shows no signs of wear or defects.
